The Steven Tyler Signature Series Diatonic Harp by Hohner (4 replies)

Having thought of the many reviews I’ve read in the past, the ones I always felt were most helpful were the ones who’s authors came back after a period of time and updated their review. And so it will be with this one.

To begin with, the black plastic storage “coffin box” case that comes with this harp is unique in that the instrument snaps into the case where it is held securely, even when the case is fully open and turned upside down! Yet the harp can easily be removed from its case when tilted and lifted up from the back. Ventilation slots designed into the case allow the harp to air out even when in a closed case (though I still wouldn’t recommend it). The case closes securely and requires thumb pressure on both sides of the face of the case in order to open it. Overall, it’s very well thought out, designed, and keeps the harp safe and secure.

The harp, only manufactured in the key of A Major, is strikingly beautiful with not a rough spot, sharp edge, or sharp corner on the entire instrument. The cover plates are black Greblon coated stainless steel with laser engraved “signature” of Steven Tyler and “Signature Series” boldly appearing on the top, and “HOHNER Made in Germany” on the bottom. The 1.05 mm brass reed plates are nickel plated and silky smooth on the lips. The Doussie’ African Hardwood comb is an eye-catching orange color that richly contrasts against the black cover plates and nickel plated brass reed plates.

The harp itself plays as beautifully as it looks. The Greblon coating on the cover plates allows the harp to slide smoothly in the mouth without sticking. Being quite airtight, the harp is extremely responsive to the slightest breath, and bends effortlessly. The tone is mellow yet warm, with a rich sound that can be quite loud with minimal air movement.

Overall, I am exceedingly happy with this harp and would highly recommend it to others. It’s by far my favorite diatonic now. I keep it on my desk, next to me, where it’s readily available to play should the opportunity present itself.

There is one caveat, though. This harp is not for people who have an allergy to nickel.

On a scale of 1 to 5 (with 1 being "Poor - Don't Waste Your Money On It" and 5 being "Great - Highly Recommended!" ) I give it five stars (or in this case, five smiley faces). :) :) :) :) :)

SYLVIA: Hi! Wanda.
WANDA: Hi! Sylvia. How'd you die?
SYLVIA: I froze to death.
WANDA: How horrible!
SYLVIA: It wasn't so bad. After I quit shaking from the cold, I began to get warm & sleepy, and finally died a peaceful death. What about you?
WANDA: I died of a massive heart attack. I suspected that my husband was cheating, so I came home early to catch him in the act. But instead, I found him all by himself in the den watching TV.
SYLVIA: So, what happened?
WANDA: I was so sure there was another woman there somewhere that I started running all over the house looking. I ran up into the attic and searched, and down into the basement. Then I went through every closet and checked under all the beds. I kept this up until I had looked everywhere, and finally I became so exhausted that I just keeled over with a heart attack and died.
SYLVIA: Too bad you didn't look in the freezer -- we'd both still be alive.

Hey everyone! I'm a very new Harp player (Picked it up back in June) and I've been learning about a new tune every week. I originally liked the idea because I love the blues and I wanted to be able to play along to it, not just listen. But I realized that most of the songs I know aren't very harp friendly, so I've been playing mostly fun, happy tunes. Which is great, but I'd like to start bluesing it up. If anyone has any suggestions as to any good ones, I'd be very appreciative. C:

And to all the people who release tabs on the site. Rock on. You guys are the best.

While on vacation down in North Carolina my bro-in-law and I went to the Emerald Hollow Mine in Hiddenite, NC.( [www.hiddenitegems.com] ). You buy a bucket of dirt from the mine and screen it in a sluice. We found several emeralds, none worth anything, although one is heart shaped. I may have it polished and mounted in a neckless for my wife. I found a very nice aquamarine, may send it off and have it cut. Also some moss agate that could be polished and put into a setting, some lapis and other stuff. I won't be able to retire off of my investment, but it was an enjoyable day.

Next we drove through Alabama to spend a couple of nights with my brother. He and a friend had gone gold mining somewhere in Alabama back in the spring. He showed me the gold he found, probably $300 to $500 worth. I've got to try that someday. I do have a couple of places here in Oklahoma a friend and I are going to try when it cools off a bit.

I've also been to the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas, but never found a diamond. I thought I found several, but they turned out to be quartz. When I saw someone else find a diamond, there was no doubt I had been finding quartz. Huge difference in the way they look.

G harp and the 3 hole... (no replies)

Okay so I'm very much so still a newb. I played for a couple months last year and had a blast learning, then put my harps away while I focused more on getting myself through a pretty brutal second semester of college...and have just recently picked them back up over the last couple of weeks.

I had a friend give me a really cheap $7 harp in the key of G. Man I love me a G harp...but this thing had NO soul! So I just purchased myself a suzuki hammond in the key of G. Oh man does it sound great! I now have good harps in the key of A, C and G (what should I go with next?).

Anyhow onto my concerns.
The 3 hole.
I thought the cheap harp my friend gave to me was broken as I can't hardly play the 3 hole...draw or blow.
But now I recieved my hammond, and I'm having issues with the exact same hole! I couldn't get the 3 blow to sound good at all, and the 3 draw...forget it! I opened up my harmonica (I'm always so afraid to do so! lol I'm afraid I'm going to break something!!) and gently adjusted the 3 blow reed...and I tried the same with the 3 draw reed.
Now the 3 blow works and I'm thrilled...but the 3 draw still is giving me horrible fits! lol :P

Is it my harp? Is it me just not knowing how to control the 3 hole? Do I just need to adjust the reeds properly? (like I wonder if I gave my harp to a veteran player if they would be able to open it up and get it to play right...maybe it's my lack of experience in adjusting the reeds).

Any suggestions?
I'm keeping the harp for now (not sending it in for a return)...but it really kinda breaks my heart a bit. All the other holes (well except for the 2 draw) work effortlessly on this thing.

===EDIT===
I should note that I CAN get the 3 draw to sound like it should...it just takes work. Sometimes it feels like I have to draw for a fraction of a second before it start sounding (where as with all the other notes except 2 draw (another story altogether lol) they sound immediatly).
I was just toying around with my hammond and I actually got the 3 draw to sound quite lovely...I'm really starting to think it's me just not knowing how to use the thing properly yet.

I just have to relate this little event that happened to me yesterday. I was metal detecting my neighbors yard when I found an old harmonica reed plate. Now, I know that might sound odd, but it is quite common in the hobby and might be seen as a sort of right of passage. Like finding Wheaties and indian head pennies. Anyway, I was explaining that to my neighbor and telling him I played which was why I knew what it was. Anyway, he said he tried but couldn't do it, but still had his harmonica. So I asked to see it, because he said he bought it 50 years ago, which was sort of when I started playing. He goes in the house and comes back with a vintage Hohner 270!!, virtually unplayed. I can tell you it was beautiful. The engraving seemed deeper and the covers were nickel plated. They also had much more arch, side-to-side than they do now. I haven't opened it up to see if it's a long slot reed plate. Needless to say it sounds great and the windsavers are still on. As a side note I found a watch fob from Teddy Roosevelt's 1904 presidency

Hi, playing melody is simply sounding the notes. Playing Blues is sounding various Blues Riffs. So can some one tell me exactly the definition of playing Blue grass ?

New interactive tab/staff tool: DVIICE (1 reply)

Hi, I'm TigerhawkT3, and I've posted a few tabs here. While making them, I found myself constantly wishing for an easy way to translate between tabs for various instruments and notes on the staff. I couldn't find what I wanted, so I did it myself.

I made a tool (links at the end of this post) that allows users to compare note positions between a 10-hole diatonic harmonica, a six-string guitar, a piano, and a musical scale. I call it the Digital Virtual Instantaneous Instrument Comparator and Emulator, or DVIICE.

Mouse over a note to display all enharmonic (equivalent) notes, and click a note to play it (uses an equal-tempered scale). The Chrome/Safari version (using the Web Audio API) allows you to hold the button down for a continuous note, while the compatibility version (using HTML5 - works on modern browsers) produces fixed tones of one beat (half a second) in length.

Want to change a guitar tab into a harmonica tab? Use the DVIICE to quickly translate each fret on the guitar to the proper hole (with any required overblows or bends) on the harmonica. Want to create sheet music out of your harmonica ditty? Tell the DVIICE how it goes on the harmonica, and it will show you where each note belongs.

I plan on using this for future tabs, and I hope others find it useful as well.

Such a lovely little song and would LOVE to learn to play it on my harmonica. I wish I could play by ear. Maybe down the line.

Anyhow, if anyone's up for a challenge I'd be so grateful!

Hi all,

first of all... I hope no one is offended by my choice of song/title.

Can anyone show me the tab for this track or where I can find it.
It might sound like a pretty basic song to you guys, but I would really like to attempt it.
I have done numerous web searches for tab without success.

Can anyone even tell me what key this song is in so I can workout which harp to attempt it on?

Subterranean Homesick Blues - Bob Dylan (1 reply)

Hi,

I'm new to harp and am looking for a little assistance in figuring out Subterranean Homesick Blues. I have found tabs that correlate with the singing melody but I am looking for a tab which correlates with the actual harmonica part in the song. It doesn't sound like its too difficult only that it involves over-bending etc. so any elaboration on stuff like this in relation to the actual song would be helpful too.

Thanks in advance
