I had to come and hide in here for fear of unleashing the power of The Force against me when I go off topic but, no, a mac is a computer, a PC is a Piece of Chit (Microsoft couldn't even spell properly.)

Hi guys and gals, I'm new to the harp, I've actually only had it a few days, so I'm not very good at picking it out by ear. Anyway I picked it up to add some depth to some songs I play on the mandolin. This is a song by a relatively unknown band: Shovels and Rope, the song is Birmingham. It doesn't seem too tough to me but I really wouldn't know. I searched the web and cant find harp tabs for this song, and would really love to learn it if ya'll can help me. Thanks a bunch

The Harp starts around 2:45 if you want to skip straight to it

Would it be possible to make the notes line up with the words? It would also be nice if it worked on the iPhone.

Turboharps? (8 replies)

Anyone out there play any of the Turboharp models?

If so, what model(s) do you have and what do you think about it/them?
How well do Turboharps (the model you have) play "out of the box"? Easy to bend?
What do you like about them and what do you dislike?
How well do the "lids" stay on after years of removing/replacing for cleaning purposes?
If a turboharp is accidentally dropped, how sturdy are the lids? Do they pop off the harp and break/chip, or do they stay on firmly?

I also noticed they had harmonicas especially for kids, such as the "TurboJunior", the "GroovyHarp", and the "PrincessHarp". Anybody ever get one of these harps? How well do these harps play (the "Kid's harps" )?

Any and all information would be appreciated, and thanks in advance.

Hey guys!

I was just wondering if anyone had tabbed the harmonica part from Suicide Blonde by INXS? I'd love to know how to play it.

Thanks,

Alex

Harmonicas in Places You Don't Expect Them (1 reply)

Hey guys!

So, recently, I was listening to my Huey Lewis and the News Greatest Hits album, and as I read the cover jacket, I learned that Huey Lewis played harmonica. I didn't know that before (only really knowing the popular stuff). But then as I listened to the end of "Heart of Rock 'n' Roll," I thought I caught a whiff of harmonica? I honestly wasn't sure if it was a harmonica or a saxophone...

Anyways, I was wondering, do you guys have any experience with that? Like, have you listened to a song and thought that the harmonica in it was another instrument? Or have there been times where you found harmonica in a song you didn't think it was in? It just intrigued me.

Anyways, think on it. Have a lovely day,

Alex

(P.S. Sorry if this is on the wrong board, I didn't know where to put it... figured it was about harmonicas though!)

Oklahoma Frontiersman Gunfighter State Champion (7 replies)

We pulled the covered wagon up to Red Castle Gun Club near Tulsa last Wed, and I shot in Ruckus in the Nations, that's the Oklahoma State Championship of Cowboy Action Shooting. Had a great time, my wife was feeling well the whole trip. She really enjoyed meeting new folks at the various after shooting functions.

Now before you think I'm bragging on my shooting skills, let me add, the feller that was beating me eight ways to Sunday dropped a loaded pistol on his 8th of 10 stages. That is a match DQ, so I took over first place. In the video, I shot this stage in 51 seconds. He probably shot it in around 35 seconds. He was faster and more accurate than me on every stage he shot, and probably deserves the award more than I do. But rules are rules. If I'd dropped a gun I would have been DQ'd too.

Anyway, this is me shooting stage 9. This was my best stage of the ten.

Caution: if you don't like guns, don't watch.

What's this got to do with harmonicas? I put a screw eye into a G harp and wore it around my neck like Charles Bronson in "Once Upon a Time in the West". I would play the little 4 note riff that Bronson was acting like he was playing before shooting.

First try to submit a TAB (11 replies)

I tried to TAB Green Eyes Eb for Chromatic. I had it on Word and figured out how to get on the small screen--Eventually. But made a blunder at first and put on a blank one. There is no forgiving for errors. Anyway my second attempt went on but under Gren Eyes. So now I know the way I might try some more.
I am trying to TAB with an indication of the rhythm as there a hundreds of TABs I don't know the song so can't really play them. I think showing the quick notes and the long notes would go a long way towards making the song playable. What doe's anyone think?

Need Help With Octaves. (1 reply)

I have a cleavage tongue, or a definite line going down the center of my tongue. I can still tongue block on either side, if I pay attention. I can always U block, like Norton Buffalo did.

I am struggling with the Octaves. I need to find a way to make sure that I can sound the 2 holes to either side and block the holes in the middle.

I have tried moving the Harmonica deeper etc. I purchased a Hohner CX12 where I can take the cover plate off and view what my tongue is doing.

I can see that the cleavage of the tongue is still a problem. Is there any work around or practice tips that someone can help me.

I really appreciate your website.

Suzuki Overdrive - overblows/overdraws (no replies)

I got a Suzuki Overdrive recently, on the basis that you can overblow or overdraw just by blocking the undesired reed. However, blowing while blocking the blow reed (and drawing while blocking the draw reed) doesn't produce any sound whatsoever. I've tried opening it up and messing with the gaps, but I'm really not sure how to adjust it for overblows/overdraws and I don't want to snap any reeds with my experimenting.

Has anyone used one of these things? Am I not using it right? Or does it really need to be gapped?

Very basic newbie question-- holding the harp (7 replies)

Just a quick question for those of you who know what you're doing-- All the free advice/lessons I've seen online specify holding your harmonica (I'll start calling mine a harp when I start playing it like one-- for now it's my harmonica :) ) in your left hand and covering with the right. Is there a reason for this? I find it much more natural and comfortable to hold mine in the right hand, and at my current skill level I don't see that it causes any difficulties. I can certainly retrain myself if there are more advanced techniques that are simplified by having the harp (oops-- harmonica) in the left hand, but if it's just a matter of tradition/standardization I think I'll stick with what's most comfortable. Probably a basic question with an obvious answer, but I'm at a pretty basic level right now. Thanks!

Hi! I've been reading about song TABs put on and not getting strikes. I don't know about the voting as I've just joined. When do you get a strike? when it is read or when it is voted. Does it become a competition or recognition for your work. When should we vote ? when we like it or when we are just saying thanks ?

Alphabetizing "My Favorites"? (4 replies)

Is it possible to have the songs listed in alphabetical order in the "My Favorites" section?

I've got a whole bunch of songs in the "My Favorites" section, but after accumulating so many (and still adding on), it's kinda difficult, and time consuming, to find any particular one song. They don't seem to be in any defined order. Some of my more recencently added "Favorites" are quite a bit higher up on the list than those that have been on the list for a couple of years and are at the near end of the list. While other newly added songs are near the end, but not at the end....

So I got to thinking (I know, always a dangerous thing 8-) ) is it possible to have the "My Favorites" song list alphabetized for ease of use?
